The Final Blog is My TIB Essay

This I Believe: Culinary Artistry Makes the Greatest Days
As a frail and elderly woman lifts her napkin to wipe her mouth, a tear rolled down her face. She then gazed out into the bay window of the assisted living facility and smiled. Within moments the nurse on duty approached the teary eyed woman and asked “Is everything okay?” The old lady responded in a shaken saturated tone “Yes indeed, for I got to dine with my loved ones again today.” The nurse almost dismissed this as a senility statement, until she noticed the lady had cleaned her plate; which had never happened before.
Later that day, when the nurse had completed her shift, she stopped by the kitchen and inquired if the dietitian had altered the menu. The newly hired kitchen manager said “No ma’am, I did.” The nurse instantly snapped back “You stupid cook! You cannot alter the prescribed diets for these patients! Their lives may be depending on it!” Calmly, the kitchen manager proceeded to wipe down his work station and said “I didn’t alter their diet, I altered their experience.” Puzzled, the nurse replied by wearing a confused look upon her face. The manager looked up and informed the nurse that immediately, after being hired, he introduced himself to all of the residence. Then he would stay extra hours and come in on his days off just to visit with the patients.
Not understanding, the nurse addressed “That’s appreciated, but what does that have to do with food?”  He went on to explain that he prompted the patients, through conversation; to reminisce on cherished times of their lives. His face brightened as he stated “Wow, It brought such joy for these beautiful people to narrate and relive their precious lives.” Frustrated, the nurse said again “And, the food correlation?” The kitchen manager promptly responded “Almost all keepsake memories possess the presence of food. This allowed me to take mental notes on the specific meals your residents associate with their loved ones.” He went on to state “Furthermore, I never altered the nutritional prescription; I just took the extra time to research and replicate the meals that provided comfort once upon a time.” With a breath of relief, and a look of amazement, the nurse said “I stand corrected Mr. uhh… umm, oh dear I didn’t get your name and I don’t want to just call you cook.” The kitchen manager stated “Good, because I am not a cook.” The nurse smiled and extended her hand proudly to shake his hand; and with a firm tone exclaimed “Yes Chef!”
The story above captures everything I recently witnessed and what a meaningful life means to me. In fact, possessing the ability to generate a little extra spark, in somebody else’s life, produces a meaningful life for two people; the recipient and I. Some situations even allow for multiple people to share this experience at once. Therefore, I believe creativity, productivity, and an uncompromising drive for success is the ultimate recipe for a life worthy of a legacy. For example, Chef Steven Keneipp a restaurateur of twenty eight years stated that he was rewarded everyday through his customers with grateful recognition. Chef Keneipp is particular in quality and not a patron for settling for second best (Keneipp). He strives to bring out the best in everything he does, as well as bring out the best in others he inspires; such as myself. Without a doubt, Chef Steven Keneipp has lived a meaningful life.
Last year, upon the completion of my anthropology class, I was inspired to get involved with my community pro bono; with the Kokomo Rescue Mission. I was not doing this for me or my resume, but as a result of my anthropology class illustrating to me how fortunate I truly am. I was overwhelmed when they told me that they had never had a volunteer for food service that was professionally trained. I dedicated myself to them from Thanksgiving through Christmas, and I left there wealthy from being paid in knowledge, compassion, and an inspirational understanding of the power of food. I say this because every day I witnessed various citizens and businesses, of various communities, coming together for one cause; caring. This includes rival restaurants showing up to drop off food at the same time cordially, volunteers of opposing religious beliefs and political affiliations working in cooperative harmony, and recipients of all races and cultures sharing bread at the same table. This experience erected my spine and chin with pride, because I finally concluded that culinary arts not only belongs to all communities but can unite them as well.
Not to be taken in an offensive manner, but true culinary art is somewhat of a superior art form. I justify this statement with the simple acknowledgement that food can be embraced by all five senses; plus one extra sense and one actual need. The first sense is sight, because we eat with our eyes first literally. If the food looks good then we will naturally start producing saliva to instantly begin the digestion process. This is followed by smell and taste. These two senses work together to achieve a flavor profile you can identify. Hearing food is present when you get a crisp crunch from a potato chip, hear your fajita coming to your table at a Mexican restaurant, or even silence from a spoonful of delectable chocolate pudding. Touch translates the appeal of foods in terms of texture. For example, nobody prefers a soggy French fry, even though the taste is identical to a crisp French fry. What is the extra sense and need you ask? Simply put, the extra need is that your body requires, seeks out, and embraces food; just like sex. The extra sense, or sixth sense, is that feeling of satisfaction, comfort, and above all love.
Consistent determination to expand my creativity and reach new heights will always be my fuel. I embrace pride in admitting I don’t know everything; nor will I before I die. I find the challenge of capturing the essence of others, and glorifying it through food, a true voyage beyond euphoria. Just like the story above proved, we can sometimes create tomorrow by recreating yesterday.

Week 10 Reflections of this class

When I was writing my executive summary, for our final project, I really got to see how this class has come together. It is very apparent to me why the three assignments that we do in this class are chosen and why they are in the order they are in. The best practices illustrates to the school how they can improve on reaching out to students, as well as it forces the students to see how important general education classes are. The exit plan is next and it gives direction as well a push in the right direction to help secure a quality career. Finally, there is the This I Believe project, which can be a life changing and moving piece of work if taken seriously.

I will be the first to admit I was just taking this class because I had to, but now I am glad and proud I did. I hope my final project will illustrate my feelings about this class properly. I find all three assignments to be excellent tools in self reflection as well as direction. Even if a student did not fully apply themselves for the assignments, I am sure that they seen or heard through the other students how valued and critical these specific reflections can be.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dctFw2eswoc&feature=colike

This Blog is a tricky one for me this week, because I do not want to reveal to much of my final project. This final project is special to me because it is the first time I have had the opportunity to express myself in a long time, especially with all of the changes my life has taken medically over the past few months. I did provide a taste of te music and some of the video footage in my final project above in the youtube hyper link.

I did discover some advice osince last class on conducting your audio track. If you wish to narrate with music in the background, then do that entirely on audacity.com. Trying to layer sound on movie maker or any other program is too complicated; if at all possible. Finally you cn find tutorials for audacity on youtube. These are nice because they are instructions with videos to support your efforts.

The music I chose from first.com s titled "The Greatest Day" Which has now become my title and theme for my final project. It took me hours to find this, but it just fits too perfectly.

Week 8 Blog Take 2 LOL

I will attempt my blog again since I did not understand the instructions the first time (my fault I admit it). The three IDEA objectives presented to blog about are of great importance to me and I hope the entire student body. Objective three “Learning to apply course material” should be of great value to all students. An example of this objective goes back to when I heard a culinary student say “I came here to learn how to cook, not do math”. I want to call this arrogant, but the student probably just didn’t see the bigger picture, and how much math is involved with the culinary art industry.
The truth is all of the NON culinary classes do play a role in your culinary career; and the other majors as well. This is more obvious in the next two objectives of “Developing skills in expressing myself orally or in writing” and “Developing a clearer understanding of, and commitment to, personal values.". To me, it is these two objectives that bring out the professionalism, passion, and hire-ability of the future professions to be had by the students. Without a doubt, I do feel evolved and more prepared for the professional world which lies before me; as a result of my passionate instructors and their embracement of these objectives. My recommendations, for the last four weeks of this quarter, are to continue in the direction which we are going, and to make sure all instructors know and understand that these objectives are well received and appreciated.

Idead blog of community

In week seve
n we discussed community and what communities we belong to. More importantly we examined what communities would be receptive to our "This I Believe" paper. The result of analyzing this really helped me realize how important food can play a role in everybodies life; and not just culinary enthusiasts. I now believe my "This I Believe" paper would be recevied by all people of all communitites and cultures. When my paper was cross examined and read by fellow students, they appreciated what I had written in regards to a meaningful life via culinary arts. What really flattered me was that it was not two other culinary students.

I still need to establish a more firm background in my paper, but I believe my primary research and my secondary research will deliver this result. Furthermore, I look forward to seeing the final presentations by all of my classmates, and not just my final product.

Week 6 which I do Believe

http://thisibelieve.org/essay/19213/

The essay link, I posted above, reminded me of me; and how I see the world. This essay inspired and reminded me of the value I have for the animals in my life, both past and present. I can become so irritated when I hear people claim that we are superior to animals, animals dont have souls (which I agree because I don't believe in souls period), and animals are here to serve us. If these specific people could stop for a second and truly examine the unconditional love a dog exhibits, they could probably learn a thing or two. I am not claiming great white sharks want to be our buddies, but animals have just as much right to be here on this planet as we do. I think they should be treated with more respect, and in return we as humans might just learn a thing or two as a result. In this specific essay, I share in my link, the man reciting his essay had a pesonality makeover because fo his dog. It resulted in him becoming engaged.

SWOT analysis

This week, in gen ed class, we did a SWOT analysis. I did not realize how overdue I was to perform one of these again. The self analysis revealed to me illustrated what I need to work on in terms of my weaknesses and threats. The realization was I need to manage my actions towards being a professional more seriously. I have always enjoyed the sound of others laughing and enjoying life with little stress. As a result I ended up a class clown and I am not sure if I want that to be my legacy.

Recovering from Absence

Obviously, I was absent last week in class, so I admit I do feel a little bit lost creating this weeks blog. I can blog that I am thankful for the ecompanion site, and its way of be useful when you are absent. By going to ecomapnion I was able to go to week four for this class and pull up the "agenda" that would have been handed out if I were present. This is what illustrated to me to work on part 5 of assignment B and what was going to be due next week.
Ecompanion is also where I discovered I needed to navigate through two different sections on ecompanion. The first section I explored was the writing tutorial. This section provides a direct and easy to understand approach to citing sources in both MLA & APA, as well as grammar and the writing process. I wish I would have been familiar with this area of ecompanion when I was taking my research writing class. The second section I explored on ecompanion was the tutorial for ecompanion. This section provides resources for troubleshooting any problems you may have with online classes, as well as providing a clear explanantion of what is expected out of students.

The Insight Game

I tested to be an "ENFJ" which is sociable, sensitive, and organized. It states I am charismatic, persuasive, and ideal for creating and following through with a vision. It also goes on to state I am sensitive to others needs. I find the majority of what the website proclaimed to be quite accurate. I have often seen people look tme for guidance in school, or in the workforce. In fact, I can even remember situations like this in boy scouts.

The cartoon portray playing multiple instruments with three appendages, while the free hand utilizes a calculator with an open scheduling book near by. I find this amusing since I do play a few instruments, but I am a math and science geek as well. The second cartoon porrayed ENFJ's as romantic and relationship focused. This I definately agreed with. The only area I was shocked at, was it mentioned nothing about devotion to athletics of some sort, or perhaps even something to the effect of competitive. Either way, it was still worth my time to do this insight game.

Week 2

I was appreciative of how we discussed "how to grade a writing assignment". I was even more pleased to see the class was in agreement on a few key items. Some of those elements were in regards to proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. It was unanimous that we all believed you should be able to spell; now that you are in your final quarter of college. We also agreed as a class to being compliant with a provided rubric. Ultimately, if you are provided a rubric, then there is no reason you can't achieve the desired grade you want; it couldn't be anymore black and white if you ask me.

In addition to discussing how to grade written assignments, we expanded on options to add to our blogs. I am hoping that there will be a plethora of creative and advanced blog sites, since I am at an art college. I feel like every time you are given the opportunity to express yourself through art you should take it. After all, you never know who you might inspire our reach out too.

A Recap for Capstone

I found it funny when I heard negative feedback from fellow students about this class, whom haven't even taken this class yet. They were complaining that they shouldn't have to pay to tell the school what they think about the school. What these misinformed students do not realize is EVERY college has a version of this class, and the Art Institute is unique in that it caters your general education courses to your degree. In addition, they also don't realize that when you progress through a school at an accelerated rate, you don't always have the time to stop and look back in awe; as to what those classes did for you. I seriously doubt Purdue had their future astronauts take a math final that was strictly related to astro physics and nothing else. When I took my math final, at the Art Institute, it was completely tailored to the culinary arts through catering; utilizing multiple mathematical formulas.

I am excited to engage in this class, while I mold and shape my culinary character to the next level. As I mentioned previously, I have not had the opportunity to fully apply how the general education classes have seperated me from the herd in a positive light. I do know that, because of them, I am not just leaving this school a certified cook, but instead a future CHEF with a BACHELORS OF SCIENCE IN CULINARY ARTS!!!!!!!!
